Why is my dog always itching?

Allergies, parasites and infections — how vets work out what's really behind the scratch.

Itching is one of the most common reasons dogs visit a vet. It can be caused by parasites such as fleas and mites, by environmental or food allergies, or by bacterial and yeast infections — and often by more than one at once.

A good work-up starts with history: when did it begin, is it seasonal, what does your dog eat, and what has already been tried? A skin examination and simple in-clinic tests like cytology help narrow things down.

Long-term itch is usually managed, not cured overnight. Consistency with parasite control, diet trials when recommended and follow-up visits make the biggest difference.

If your dog is scratching enough to break the skin, losing hair or shaking their head often, book a consultation rather than waiting it out.

This guide is general information, not a diagnosis. Every pet is different — speak with a vet about your pet's specific needs.
